Malaysia Makes History: SpaceANT-D, the Nation’s First Picosatellite, Successfully Launched into Orbit

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and SpaceIn Sdn Bhd, a USM spin-off company involved in small satellites and Internet of Things (IoT) services, have launched Malaysia’s first picostallite, SpaceANT-D today.

The satellite was onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that took off fromVandenberg Space Force Base, California at 2.47 am local time, the university said in a statement.

“SpaceANT-D will be deployed by Alba Orbital in seven to 10 days and the first signals will be beamed to an earthbound station. The 5 cubic centimetre (cm) SpaceANT-D, weighing less than 250 grams, will demonstrate storing and transmitting of data for IoT applications,” USM said, adding that the mission was a joint venture between USM, SpaceIn, and the Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters’ Society (MARTS) and is an important achievement in the country’s efforts of achieving the Malaysia Space Exploration 2030 goals.

NIBONG TEBAL: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) dan SpaceIn Sdn Bhd (SpaceIn) melakar sejarah dengan pelancaran satelit kecil piko pertama Malaysia dikenali SpaceANT-D.

Pelancaran jam 2.47 pagi waktu tempatan itu menggunakan roket Falcon 9 milik Space X dari Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif SpaceIn, Dr Norilmi Amilia Ismail, berkata SpaceANT-D akan dilepaskan daripada ‘deployer’ (pengerahan) ‘Alba Orbital’ dalam masa tujuh hingga 10 hari lagi sebelum isyarat pertama satelit dihantar ke stesen bumi.

“SpaceANT-D berukuran 5x5x5 sentimeter (cm) dan berat kurang dari 250 gram (g) ini akan menunjukkan demonstrasi misi penstoran dan penghantaran data untuk aplikasi IoT.

NIBONG TEBAL: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and SpaceIn Sdn Bhd, a spin-off company of USM involved in the production of small satellites and IoT services, made history with the launch of Malaysia’s first picosatellite, SpaceANT-D, at 2.47am today.

The launch utilised SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.

SpaceANT-D will be released from the deployer AlbaPod within the next seven to 10 days, and then its first handshake will be sent to the ground station.

Measuring 5x5x5 cm and weighing less than 250g, SpaceANT-D will demonstrate the mission of storing and forwarding data for IoT applications.
